What Headache Remedies Can You Recommend?

To be effective, headache remedies depend a great deal on the cause and type of the headache, and you should visit the posts in this blog to see discussions of headache causes, sinus headaches, migranes, etc. for some cause-related discussions and cause-specific headache remedies.

However, for “regular” headaches, there are a number of headache remedies that people have reported work for them.

Aromatherapy as headache remedies

Aromatherapy has been accepted by many in recent years as the way to go, and it can provide very effective headache relief, provided you use the right essential oils. Peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus or sandalwood are recommended to relieve headaches. Make sure the essential oil you use is pure, and you can use the oil for massage rubbed into the forehead or temples, or use candles or soap with that essential oil, and you should find that it gives you some relief from that headache.

Rubbing a little rosemary oil, or peppermint or lavender oil into the temples can help get rid of that headache for many people. See which works best for you.

Massage as a headache remedy

Massage is good to stimulate and relax people, and you can use the same essential oils as above to have someone massage them into your back and shoulders, or at the back of the neck, or on the base of your skull. A foot massage might help you to relax more fully, and as tension is often a trigger for headaches, this could easily help relieve your headache.

Cold or Heat as headache remedies

Some people prefer heat when they have a headache, with a heat back placed on the forehead, or the temples, while for others, a cold pack wrapped in a towel and placed at the back of the neck gives them relief from their headache. You may find that one works better than another for you, depending on the type of headache, so try it out.

Exercise as a headache remedy

We all know that exercise is good for us, especially if it is regular exercise, and some people have found that a gentle walk even when they have a migraine headache can give them relief. By exercising, you increase the flow of blood to all areas of the body, which will help to relieve the headache.

Herbs as headache remedies

There are many different herbs that are recommended by different people for relieving headache symptoms with feverfew, peppermint and ginkgo being the most well known. One thing to note is that if you have trouble with an acidic stomach, then do not take peppermint for your headache. Despite the common idea that mints are good for the digestion, if you suffer from acid reflux, then peppermint will not help your stomach.

Reflexology as a headache remedy

As with all things, reflexology works well for some, and not for others, but it is simple enough for you to try to stop your headache wherever you are. Simply use your thumb and index finger from one hand to apply pressure to the fleshy web between the thumb and index finger on the other hand. Hold this pressure for a minute or two, and see if it helps send that headache away.

There are plenty of other ideas that are out there, but that is enough for you to try to get rid of your headache for now.
